NOTRE-DAME PEN
Design by Lia Hofmeister
Born from the shadows of Gothic cathedrals and inspired by Victor Hugo’s immortal masterpiece *The Hunchback of Notre Dame*, the Notre-Dame Pen combines art, architecture, and functionality in an extraordinary writing instrument.
Perched atop it is a watchful gargoyle—the mysterious guardian of the ancient walls, whose gaze seems to have been sweeping over the rooftops of Paris for centuries. It sits atop an intricately carved column, while below, a richly detailed relief brings the majestic façade of a Gothic cathedral to life. Every line, every indentation tells of stone vaults, bell towers, and the stories hidden within its walls.
The solid ring at the end of the pen not only gives the design its distinctive silhouette but also serves a practical purpose: in an emergency, it can be used as a glass breaker. In this way, the Notre-Dame Pen combines historical aesthetics with modern practicality for everyday use.
The refill is extended and retracted via a precise screw mechanism—a deliberate tribute to traditional craftsmanship and mechanical perfection. The pen is compatible with standard, off-the-shelf ballpoint pen refills, making it just as suitable for everyday use as it is for a collector’s display case.
The Notre-Dame Pen is more than just a writing instrument. It is a small metal cathedral, a monument to Gothic architecture, and an invitation to write every line with the same passion with which Victor Hugo once created the world of Quasimodo, Esmeralda, and the bells of Notre-Dame.
A pen for those who not only want to write stories, but also want to preserve them.
